If it is truly a debit card and not also set up for use in the same manner as a credit card, that is probably the reason. Most online sites are set up to take credit cards. Only the bank checking cards that also work like a credit card (but still deduct the money from your account) will work that way.

I had the same problem when I came back from Thailand last year. I could get cash out of the ATM but I could pay for goods online or in shops. In the end I went to my bank and they ordered me a new card and that was fine. Is it just with this website or are you having problems in general with using it over the internet and/or in shops? If it in general then see your bank and see if they can order you a new card.

Only the Bank can tell you why it doesn't work. Has your bank got a call centre for out of hrs calls ? if not you'll have to check with them tomorrow.

a lot of credit cards have to be verified with an addional password which you have to set up with the card provider but can do this online
likes of verified with visa for example

another reason is that you card may be ready to expire and will not go through as the new card has been put on the system and your old has been removed
as had this myself

yet another reason is if its outside you spending habits

had this before after i tried about 3 times i got a customer coutersey call from my CC provider
